Safety and security are literally at your student’s fingertips at UW-Madison, thanks to a brand-new app.
The UW-Madison Police Department has officially launched BadgerSAFE – a safety app that aims to keep the campus community informed and provide quick access to safety related resources. The app replaces UWPD’s WiscGuardian safety app, which debuted in 2017. While BadgerSAFE was built primarily for UW students and staff, anyone can download the app. That means BadgerSAFE is a great way for parents and family members to stay connected.
UWPD conducted a soft launch of the app this summer. After hearing feedback during the soft launch and making updates, BadgerSAFE was officially launched on August 1. So far, nearly 8,000 people have downloaded the app.
To download the app, search for “BadgerSAFE” in your phone’s app store. You can also find additional download instructions here. Read more on the safety features provided:
Friend Walk
Your student can send their location in real-time to a friend or family member. This will allow the friend or family member to track the student as they walk to their destination. If necessary, the friend or family member can trigger a call to emergency services.
Safety Alerts
Receive Off-Campus Emergency Alerts — these push notifications through the BadgerSAFE app alert our community about significant threats in certain areas OFF the UW-Madison campus – in areas where a large number of our students live or frequently visit. WiscAlerts will also be sent to the BadgerSAFE app — however, all WiscAlert emergency notifications will still be sent via text and email.
Connect with UWPD
This one button feature allows a student to call or text with a UWPD Dispatcher in a non-emergency situation. As soon as the dispatcher is available, they’ll respond. Note: in emergencies, a student should ALWAYS call or text 911.
“I’m OK” Feature
The “I’m OK” feature sends the student’s location and a message to a recipient of their choice to let them know that they are OK. This button can be used during an emergency or critical incident to inform friends and family that they are safe.
