Safety
At UW–Madison, we are deeply concerned about student safety. Downtown Madison is part of a growing city with all of the benefits and some of the problems that come with that status. We have made safety a top priority by collaborating with students, police, administrators, city leaders, and community members to build a more safety-conscious campus community.
UW–Madison offers several important safety-related programs and services, including:
- University Police, our own 24-hour police department devoted to providing for the safety and security of all people who come in contact with UW–Madison.
- Safe Arrival for Everyone (SAFE) programs, offering safe nighttime transportation through SafeWalk, SafeRide bus, and SafeRide cab.
- Designated lightway walking paths, emergency telephones located strategically throughout campus, and chimera self-defense training for female students.
- The Associated Students of Madison and Langdon Street Neighborhood Watch programs, increasing student presence around campus from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m on weekends.
As partners in staying safe, students should take personal responsibility for their safety. Encourage your student to:
- Use campus safety programs and services
- Travel together and stay together
- Walk in well-lit places
- Always carry a cell phone
- If they choose to drink alcohol, do so in moderation (as a reminder, the legal age to consume alcohol in Wisconsin is 21)
