Office of the Registrar
The Registrar’s Office manages important student records and processes, including:
- Personal information, grades, transcripts, diplomas
- Class schedules and course guide
- Enrollment and major/certificate declarations
- Wisconsin residency for tuition
- Transfer credits and credit evaluations
- FERPA privacy compliance
- Academic eligibility for athletes
Undergraduate Advising
Advising is a partnership between students and UW–Madison advisors.
- SOAR Orientation: First-year students receive assistance with enrolling in classes and learning about campus resources.
- After SOAR, students are assigned an advisor in their major or a cross-college advisor if undecided.
- Advisors help with course planning, campus resources, and career goals.

When to meet with an advisor?
- Students should meet with an advisor at least once per semester for enrollment and planning.
- Advisors also assist with graduation planning and encourage involvement.
Enrollment Prep:
- Complete the Pre-Enrollment Checklist in Student Center (under “Tasks”).
- Clear any holds (such as library fines, tuition, or advisor meetings) before enrolling.
Disability Resources

The McBurney Disability Resource Center provides classroom accommodations and access for students with disabilities.
- Apply online under “Students→Apply for Accommodations.”
- Eligible students complete McBurney Orientation and Service Training (MOST).
Textbooks & Course Materials
Students may need textbooks, lab gear, or art supplies for their classes.
How to find materials:
- Check your email before classes start
- Use Course Search & Enroll (see “Sections” tab)
- Look in MyUW under “Textbooks” and “Courses”
Other tips:
- Campus libraries often loan materials
- Course packets are sold at campus copy shops
- Ensure you are purchasing the correct textbook edition by using the ISBN (a 10-or 13-digit number) listed by the instructor.
Academic Support
Academic support services are offered on a variety of topics in several locations across campus. Explore our 15 learning centers and other learning support resources.
Free Tutoring
UW offers free tutoring and learning resources:
- Residence Halls: Math, chemistry, and writing help
- Writing Center: Free virtual writing support
- GUTS (Greater University Tutoring Service): Student-run peer tutoring for STEM, study skills, and languages
Encourage your student to use these free resources!
Campus Libraries
UW–Madison Libraries are among the best in North America. They offer many resources, including:
- Research help (in person, chat, text, or phone)
- Workshops and tutorials
- Equipment loans (laptops, cameras)
- Study spaces for individuals and groups
Technology Support (DoIT)
DoIT helps students with tech needs:
- Free software through the Campus Software Library
- Tech support (in person, phone, email, chat)
- Cybersecurity and file storage training
- Classes and tutorials for tech skills
