Stress Relief
Although college is often thought of as being the best time in a young adult’s life, balancing the many demands of academics, out-of-class activities and a social life can be overwhelming at times. Extended periods of cold temperatures and lack of sunshine during this time of year may also leave students feeling “down” and restless from spending so much time indoors.
To relieve stress, encourage your student to:
- Eat a balanced diet, exercise regularly, and, when possible, spend some time outdoors.
- Try to get eight hours of sleep and avoid “all-nighters”; four or five hours of sleep is better than none.
- Take a relaxation and/or stress management workshop offered by University Health Services. These sessions are designed to help students put life in balance, reduce exam anxiety or even their fear of public speaking.
- Participate in yoga and relaxation classes offered at the Natatorium and SERF, or through a Wisconsin Union Mini Course.
- Set aside time to socialize and have fun, as well as quiet time for self-reflection.
- Set reasonable short- and long-term goals; reward yourself when accomplished.
- Ask friends and family for help.
If you are concerned that your student has been stressed for a prolonged period and you feel there could be a more serious mental health issue, encourage him or her to seek help from a professional counselor at University Health Services Counseling Center (608/265-5600).
