UW Researchers and Students “OutSmart” the Flu

A cutting-edge use of smartphones may help UW–Madison combat this year’s flu season. Ajay Sethi, assistant professor in the Department of Population Health Sciences, and his team created a mobile app, OutSmart Flu, that provides a way for students to record and report any flu-like symptoms they experience. Data is analyzed to assess flu risk on campus and is shared with the public on the study’s website.

The study began in September of 2013 and will continue through May 2014. Depending on evaluations of the study, the program could continue for future years. University Health Services has endorsed the initiative (although it is conducted independent of UHS). The study does not release any individual’s information or symptoms to UHS.

Questions about the study may be sent to questions@outsmartflu.org.

It’s not too late to get a flu shot! UHS offers free seasonal flu shots for all registered students. Encourage your student to make an appointment by calling UHS at 608-265-5600 or logging on to MyUHS.
