Addressing Campus Incidents of Hate and Bias

UW–Madison is taking steps to make it easier to report incidents of hate and bias, furthering a commitment to a safe, inclusive, and respectful campus environment.

Created by the Division of Student Life, new tools, including an online form and office locations for reporting, are designed to prevent or respond to such incidents. A bias incident is an intentional threat or act of harassment or intimidation — verbal, written, or physical — that targets someone because of an actual or perceived characteristic of that person. (Expression of an idea or opinion that a person finds offensive does not, per se, constitute an act of bias.)

“Incidents of hate or bias can dramatically disrupt the learning process, both for those who experience these incidents firsthand and those who care about others around them,” says Lori Berquam, vice provost for student life and dean of students. “We want it to be easier to report these incidents. We also want everyone to understand that we treat these issues very seriously.”
